Perhaps there's only the illusion of choice. The choices we make appear to be our own, but looking back it's as if we've been dragged along by a string the entire time.

I suppose we'll often make the same choices in the same situations. After all, we are who we are, and we make the choices we make because of it. The only way to change our mistakes is to change ourselves, so we become people who don't make those mistakes.

You have to think of what you'd like to change, and then try to change it. It won't happen overnight. It may not even happen at all. But like most things, we get better with practice. Start with something small. Perhaps be more kind to people if you haven't been, or more forgiving if you've been holding a grudge, or more assertive if you've been a pushover. Then we make entirely different mistakes than the ones before.
